Extreme Dieting – Good Or Bad?

July 5, 2012 by Michele Neylon 4 Comments

I work in IT.

A lot of my friends work in IT.

So statistically speaking we’re probably all leading pretty sedentary lifestyles tied to our desks.

I’m not sure about the stats on waist girth etc., but a lot of us are probably heavier than we should be (of course some people I know are incredibly fit etc., so it’s not everyone .. )

At a recent event I attended several people had obviously had drastic diets and impressive weight loss. One person, who shall remain nameless, had dropped about 30kg in about 4 months. That’s truly impressive!

But what was involved?

By the sounds of things it was pretty extreme..

Breakfast – zero (I thought that was meant to be a really bad idea?)

Mid morning – apple or orange

Lunch and dinner – 120g lean beef, chicken, veal or white fish. Serve this with either a very light salad or vegetables (no oils)

And of course alcohol is completely banned.

Trying to work out how many calories that equates to per day is hard, but I guess it’s less than 1000, or maybe I’m getting it wrong.

Is this kind of extreme dieting a good idea?

Is it sustainable?

Tesco Diets Read My Blog!

June 20, 2012 by Michele Neylon 1 Comment

As anyone who reads this blog knows I’ve been trying to follow the Tesco Diet plans since January.

Back in April I noticed that they’d made some drastic changes to their site. While many of the changes added new features and functionality I was a bit peeved by what they’d done with the shopping list functionality.

So I wrote about it.

They contacted me earlier today to find out more about the issues I was having.

Now whether or not they’ll be able to rectify them or not is another matter, but at least they’re trying to reach out to their customers.

Nicely done Tesco!

Healthy Breakfast In Scottsdale

June 6, 2012 by Michele Neylon 1 Comment

I’ve mentioned more than once how travel really makes dieting awkward. Yesterday is best written off, as I spent the day on planes and eating whatever they gave me.

Today, however, I started the day off with a very tasty breakfast in the Royal Palms in Scottsdale:

Grapefruit juice, coffee and Baked oatmeal with berries served with vanilla almond granola from Laura’s Gourmet Granola (I’ve no idea who they are!)

The entire thing was absolutely delicious and not heavy calorie-wise.

I’ll probably misbehave later in the day, but at least I started off well 🙂

Checking How Bad Food Is

June 4, 2012 by Michele Neylon 2 Comments

There’s a lot of pretty good guides available online to help you check how good (or bad) various types of food are.

Unfortunately a lot of them are quite boringly presented ie. lots of tables of data and not much in the way of visuals.

This site, however, is pretty simple to use and incredibly visual.

It’s not as comprehensive as a lot of the bigger sites and guides, but you can immediately see things like Pringles being much worse for you than Walkers.

A Simple Healthy Eating Meme

June 3, 2012 by Michele Neylon 4 Comments

I’ve no idea where this graphic came from originally, but it sums up eating habits very clearly under the meme:

Eat Less Crap – Eat more Food

CRAP – carbonated drinks, refined sugar, artificial sweeteners & colours, processed food

FOOD – fruits & vegetables, organic lean proteins (and probably anything organic),  omega 3 fatty acids, drink water

Is My Weighing Scales Telling Me Lies?

June 1, 2012 by Michele Neylon 2 Comments

I hadn’t weighed myself for the last few days and I also haven’t been eating as much in the evening as before.

So I got a really nice surprise when I weighed myself this morning.

A massive 3kg drop!

Woohoo!

Now of course I do know that this could be something very very temporary, but I’m going to enjoy it for today. Ok? I think I’m allowed a day of happiness 🙂

Tracking My Weight Over Time With Withings

May 27, 2012 by Michele Neylon 2 Comments

withings wifi bodyscaleI’ve been using a withings weighing scales since January.

I tend to weigh myself almost every single morning, so I can really get an accurate overview of how my weight fluctuates over time.

While it’s fascinating to look at it it can also be quite disheartening.

My weight isn’t going down as quickly as I’d like and so I’m not as motivated as I was originally.

Progress helped to keep me motivated.

Lack of it is putting me off.

On the plus side the weather here has improved a lot 🙂
